vid recs? [Apr. 12th, 2015|09:07 pm]
Lydia Bell
So my daughter, seeing me working on VVC stuff tonight, asked me to explain vidding to her. I explained loosely, but I figured the best way to explain would be to show her some vids. Does anyone have any recs for vids for A:TLA, Korra books 1-3 (she hasn't finished 4 yet), Guardians of the Galaxy, or Harry Potter 1-4? She and I would appreciate it. :D

I'm just here so I don't get fined^H^H^H^H^H suspended [Mar. 22nd, 2015|12:48 pm]
Lydia Bell
I just read that somebody had their account suspended because all they do with their LJ account is crosspost from DW. I would like to not have that happen. (For posts on my own journal, all I do is crosspost, but I do comment on other people's journals so maybe that's good enough? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

I fail so hard at keeping up with current shows [Apr. 2nd, 2014|12:48 pm]
Lydia Bell
When did CBS decide that it was only going to make the most recent 3 episodes of Elementary available on their site?  I thought I had time to catch up, and now I can't watch 2x14 and 2x15. Hrmph.

At least I'm caught up on Sherlock and Sleepy Hollow. Maybe I need to only watch shows that have short seasons.

Book swapping [Sep. 19th, 2013|12:56 pm]

I have books I don't want, and books I want to read for free. :) Does anyone have experience with Paperback Swap, BookMooch, or other similar services? Which would you recommend?

I love being in an active fandom! [Aug. 28th, 2013|02:17 pm]
Lydia Bell
One of the big reasons I'm enjoying Night Vale so much is just that so many of my friends, people I follow on Twitter, etc. are listening to it. It's so FUN to be able to squee along with friends, or make random references and know that so many people around me will get them. I haven't really had that fannish experience for a while. (The last time was probably Ten and Donna-era Doctor Who. sigh.)

I usually get in on fandoms late, because we don't go to the movies much and rely on Netflix for most of our TV consumption. But Night Vale's free, and you can get it as soon as it's released no matter where you are in the world, so it's easy for people to get into it and get caught up. That's something you don't get with TV and movie fandoms, and they seem more splintered as a result -- at least the ones I've been into. Sure, people can download those too, but not everyone does so there's always a gap between where different fans are. I love that something that's easily accessible to anyone with the ability to download and play .mp3s is becoming such a hit.

Also, coming soon to a Tumblr near you: Passive Aggressive Notes from Night Vale! I just need to come up with a couple more images to get it kicked off...

It was a a SOCIAL EXPERIMENT, y'all! [Jun. 5th, 2013|12:38 pm]
Lydia Bell
This excuse was pathetic when LJ wankers were using it a decade ago. It's really beyond sad for a tenured professor.

Prof with poor impulse control wishes he hadn’t tweeted about will power, part the second
So, yeah. I’ve been continuing to follow the saga of Dr. Geoffrey Miller and day two of what just might be his worst week ever. In case you missed it, this whole thing started when Dr. Miller tweeted:
Dear obese PhD applicants: if you don’t have the willpower to stop eating carbs, you won’t have the willpower to do a dissertation. #truth
Cue the poo storm of epic proportions. It’s enough to keep writers at Jezebel, HuffPo, Jane and Bitch magazines happily scribbling for weeks. I mean we are talking about worldwide calls for Game of Thrones-style retribution here. But amongst all the yelling, are some very interesting developments.

First, there’s this video response from Miller’s colleague and UNM Psychology Department Chairwoman, Prof. Jane Ellen Smith. It is interesting to note that Professor Smith seems to take this whole tweeting business pretty darn seriously.  But right in the middle of the video, she reveals the third-act-dramatic-twist! Professor Smith says that Dr. Miller is now claiming that the whole tweeting business was part of an “research study” he was running.

Step 1: tweet hateful bullshit about fat people
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Publication!

Sure, sounds legit.

argh [May. 19th, 2013|04:32 pm]
Lydia Bell
Because of tendinitis, I'm not allowed to run for at least another week and a half, so instead I'm trying to stay fit by biking. Except that today I went out on one of my usual routes and they were doing construction on the road. The result? Two flat tires, I had to walk my bike home, and the only free time I had this afternoon is now gone. Sigh. At least I was only a couple of miles out when it happened.

Yuletide meme. That's right, I said Yuletide meme. [Jan. 7th, 2013|07:19 am]
Lydia Bell

Welcome to new people I've met as a result of [personal profile] kouredios' friending meme! Unfortunately, this is about as often as I post. ::facepalm::

Between depression and travel, Yuletide 2012 almost didn't exist for me. I had to default, and I read maybe three stories (including my gift, which absolutely did exist and which I greatly appreciated).

However! I saw this meme going around, and thought it would be fun to look back at Yuletides past.

Happy birthday to me! [Oct. 30th, 2012|11:47 am]
Lydia Bell
You guys, you really need to find a way to get [personal profile] dorinda to agree to write comment fic for you. Back in April, in the "selfish meme," I asked for Zombies, Run! podfic or commentfic, and Dorinda offered Jack/Eugene. NATURALLY I JUMPED ON THE OPPORTUNITY. Some time went by, and I didn't think anything of it because these things happen and I think I have owed [personal profile] elynross commentfic for about 7 years now (*cough*), but anyway, I got an email saying "sorry it's taking so long, but the commentfic has turned into a full-blown story." Well, I mean, if you insist on writing me over 10K about how Jack and Eugene met, I suppose that's OK.

So then last week, I received this as a birthday present!

Recalled to Life (16438 words) by faviconDorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Zombies Run!
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Holden/Eugene Woods
Characters: Jack Holden, Eugene Woods
Summary: Before Jack and Eugene could find Abel Township, first they had to find each other.

It is wonderful and you should read it if you like a little slash in your survivalist stories, or a little survivalism in your slash. Or, you know, you just like good stories. You don't really need to know the canon; it's set before the events of the game so all you really need to know is that there has been a zombie outbreak, which I'm thinking you've already guessed. Jack and Eugene are a couple in the game (they're a teeny bit cagey about it, but that's true of most of the relationships), and Dorinda incorporated some events they've referred to, so the story makes great headcanon.  :D

Thank you so much, again, Dorinda!
